Celebrating April’s Jazz Month: Cécile McLorin Salvant at the Ertegun Jazz Series
Archival Feature: December 3, 2012, Turkish Embassy Residence, Washington D.C. – As we celebrate Jazz Month this April, TATV takes you back to a standout archival performance by French-American jazz marvel Cécile McLorin Salvant. This event was part of the prestigious Ertegun Jazz Series, established by the Turkish Embassy in Washington D.C. in collaboration with Jazz at Lincoln Center as a tribute to the legendary Ertegun brothers, Ahmet and Nesuhi, founders of Atlantic Records.
The concert featured opening remarks from the iconic Herbie Hancock, a jazz legend and UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador, who set the tone for an evening of musical excellence and cultural dialogue. Hancock remarked, “We will honor and remember the Ertegün Brothers who made influential contributions and help build a strong bridge between our two cultures through jazz.”
Salvant’s performance skillfully intertwined the historical depth and innovative spirit of jazz, drawing from her diverse influences and solid musical upbringing. She challenged common perceptions of jazz, stating, “A lot of people have the misconception that jazz is a very serious music, a very virtuosic music, which it can be, but it can also be very funny and light.” Her interpretations brought this lightness and humor to the forefront, captivating the audience with her expressive range.
From a young age, Salvant has been a significant voice in jazz, her performances echoing the genre’s rich narrative and emotional breadth. That night, she delivered renditions of both classic jazz pieces and her own compositions, each infused with her unique style and sensitivity.
Herbie Hancock, in his introduction, highlighted jazz’s enduring power as a cultural ambassador, capable of bridging diverse communities and fostering mutual understanding. This message resonated through Salvant’s dynamic showcase, which celebrated the genre’s revolutionary roots and its ongoing evolution.
The evening left an indelible impression of artistic integrity and unity on all who attended. It also reaffirmed the Ertegün Jazz Series’ commitment to honoring the profound impact of its namesakes, Ahmet and Nesuhi Ertegün, on the world of music.
Reflecting on her experience, Salvant shared her deep connection with the audience and her enthusiasm for future musical explorations that pay homage to jazz’s great legends. As we observe Jazz Month, we recall Ahmet Ertegün’s words: “Music is the language of the soul, and jazz is its most eloquent expression.”
Stay tuned to TATV this April for more exceptional performances that celebrate the rich heritage and unifying power of jazz.
