STEAM-tastic Workshop: From Cells to Biomes – Fluid Art & Inspiration with Miss Virginia USA
Join us for an inside look at the STEAM-tastic workshop, “From Cells to Biomes – Fluid Pours,” held on Saturday, August 31, 2024, at the Del Ray Artisans Co-op in Alexandria, Virginia! This exciting event for kids aged 6-10 explores the wonders of life on Earth, from cells to entire ecosystems, and lets participants create vibrant acrylic-poured paintings inspired by these biological marvels.
The workshop, led by passionate STEAM educator Suzan Ok Shumate, features not only hands-on activities but also an inspiring interview with Miss Virginia USA 2024, Himanvi Panidepu, conducted by TATV host Courtney Valesco. Himanvi shares her journey and her “STEM Powered Leaders” initiative, empowering young minds to break stereotypes and excel in non-traditional STEM fields. Her interview is a must-watch for anyone looking to be motivated by a trailblazer in both STEM and the arts.
But what exactly is STEAM? STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics—an educational approach that integrates these disciplines to foster creativity and critical thinking. Meanwhile, STEM refers to Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, with a strong focus on technical and scientific learning. By adding ‘Art’ to STEM, STEAM emphasizes the importance of creativity alongside technical skills.
Suzan’s goal with the STEAM-tastic workshop is to inspire young minds to explore the interconnectedness of these disciplines, encouraging both critical and creative thinking. By integrating science into art projects, she aims to make learning more dynamic and accessible, fostering a love for both STEM and the arts.
