Toastmasters Testimonials: Real Stories, Real Growth
What does Toastmasters really do for its members?
That question inspired a video testimonial project featuring members of the District 29 Toastmasters community. Recorded at the District 29 Conference and at Fairfax Public Access (FPA), the project captures personal stories of growth, confidence, leadership, and connection.
One of those stories comes from Lynn Romano, a Toastmaster of more than 24 years.
As a former teacher, Lynn was already comfortable speaking in front of certain groups. Yet she discovered that Toastmasters helped her become more outspoken, confident, and willing to express herself in situations where she might previously have remained silent.
She recalls a moment when she stood up for herself in a conversation with a friend and surprised herself afterward. “Did I really say that?” she thought. For Lynn, that newfound confidence was one of the many gifts Toastmasters provided.
Toastmasters also prepared her for unexpected situations. When assigned to engage attendees at a conference, she initially wondered what she would talk about. Then she remembered: “You’re a Toastmaster. You can talk about anything.”
That theme of growth appeared throughout the testimonials.
Several speakers described joining Toastmasters with hesitation. Lina Monsalve admitted that she was not initially interested in Toastmasters, but found herself drawn to a community of people from different professions and backgrounds who challenged and supported one another. Victoria Hsueh joined simply to answer a Table Topics question and eventually found herself leading a club that achieved all ten Distinguished Club Program goals.
Others emphasized the role of mentorship and encouragement. Rahsaan Corbin spoke about the importance of learning from others and having people who genuinely want to see you succeed. The message was echoed repeatedly throughout the interviews: growth happens faster when people support one another.
For Kimberly Choplin, Toastmasters provided practical tools for managing nervousness and organizing ideas into effective presentations. Wilson Rumble reflected on how a single decision to join opened the door to years of personal and professional development. Steven Stoiber described the value of learning through participation and continual practice.
The testimonials also highlighted something that is often overlooked. While Toastmasters is known for public speaking, many members spoke more about community than communication. They described a place where people encourage one another, celebrate successes, and help fellow members take on challenges they might not otherwise attempt.
Marsha Collins captured that idea particularly well when she described Toastmasters as an investment in oneself. Through speaking, leadership, and service, members often discover capabilities they did not know they possessed.
The program concludes with reflections from Matt Kinsey, Past International President of Toastmasters International. Rather than focusing on titles or accomplishments, he challenges viewers to ask a simple but powerful question: “Who do I need to be?” Leadership, he suggests, begins not with a position, but with personal growth.
This testimonial initiative was made possible through the collaboration of District 29 Toastmasters leaders and volunteers. Prime Time Toastmasters, based at Fairfax Public Access, was instrumental in bringing the project to life. Club members helped organize, coordinate, and support the recordings, which were later produced by Turkish-American Television (TATV) for broadcast on Fairfax Public Access television and online platforms.
Taken together, these stories reveal that Toastmasters is about much more than learning to speak in public. It is about gaining confidence, finding community, developing leadership skills, and discovering a voice that can make a difference.
Sometimes the journey begins with a speech.
Sometimes it begins with a conversation.
And sometimes, as these testimonials show, it begins when someone simply decides to walk through the door.
